What is your favorite public health experience and why?
“From 2016 to 2018, I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana in Sub-Saharan Africa. I spent the early months learning the language, culture, and public health goals of the country before I arrived to Motlhabaneng, my home for the next 27 months. Motlhabaneng is a rural village of approximately 1500 people, located 30 minutes down a gravel road and about two hours from the closest grocery store.
During the two years in Bots, I worked with community leaders to launch HIV/AIDS programs to strengthen HIV prevention and treatment, implemented youth programs and provided additional support to young girls who were mothers, and began malaria campaigns to create awareness and comprehensive malaria prevention and treatment.
Not only was this my favorite experience, but also the most challenging. However, I am grateful for this experience and the friendships I developed along the way.”
