What is your favorite public health experience and why?
“My favorite public health experience is providing health education presentations to caregivers and young children ages 0-5 at Lotus Bloom Family and Child Resource Center. I loved sharing the nutrition benefit of healthy food, along with doing demonstrations on simple healthy snacks, like smoothies and ants on a log (celery stick, topped with peanut butter and raisins). I hope that these presentations inform caregivers on how to make healthier snacks on tight schedules and budgets, along with encouraging children to try various foods.”
Why do you care about public health?
“Public Health is about promoting and protecting the health of individuals and their communities. This is important to me because I want everyone to have the ability to live their full potential, which is mainly capable if their basic human needs are met- such as shelter, access to food, safety, and more. Many individuals helped my immigrant parents navigate the complex healthcare, education, and welfare system when they first immigrated to the United States; this helped them become stable and raise my brothers and I to become healthy, productive citizens. I want to do the same, and help underserved individuals access similar benefits with respect.”
